The Future of XPS Foam

Research and Development Guides XPS Manufacturers Toward the Next Generation of Foam Insulation

In their constant process of product improvement, XPS manufacturers have developed new flame retardants for use in foam insulation. These alternatives have been evaluated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for Environment Program and are expected to improve environmental performance, particularly as related to aquatic organisms.

Extruded Polystyrene Foam Association (XPSA) member companies continue to:

  • Work with testing labs and evaluation services to ensure that XPS foam insulation manufactured with the new flame retardants continues to meet the physical property, performance, and fire safety characteristics expected of XPS foam insulation.
  • Work with building and fire code authorities and government agencies to obtain the necessary approvals for use of XPS foam insulation with flame retardant alternatives.
  • Work with flame retardant manufacturers to ensure production capacity is adequate to satisfy market demands.

This bold and exciting transition, which will occur over the next several years, is an important for the industry’s product stewardship and sustainability goals.
